The Department of English and Foreign Languages was initially established as the Department of Foreign Languages in 1976. This Department is mainly involved in the teaching of English and Foreign languages like French, German, Italian, Japanese and Russian. In 2003, the Department was reoriented as the Department of Culture and Heritage so as to pursue other academic concerns like History, Museology and Archaeology. However, in order to give supreme importance to language teaching and all the cultural backdrop that encompasses each foreign language, the Department was rechristened as the Department of English and Foreign Languages in 2012. All the courses in the foreign languages are at present restricted to Certificate and Diploma levels. A few years back in order to meet the contemporary needs M.A. (Translation) Course in German and Russian were also introduced. The Department also conducts short-term and need-based courses in the above foreign languages if there are aspirants. The Department undertakes translation and consultation work connected with the above foreign languages. Around 14 years back short-term course in Communicative English and 1 year Post Graduate Diploma Course in Communicative English were introduced. The short-term course in Communicative English is enjoying a high demand and these courses are repeated every three months with an in-take of 25 students. The add on feature of language teaching in the Department includes a multimedia Language Lab.
