The Department of Hindi, established in 1963 is one of the oldest University Hindi Departments of the State. It was part of the erstwhile Kerala University. At the early stage it was functioning in the Government Maharajas College Campus, Ernakulam. In 1967 it was shifted to Thrikkakara Campus as ‘Ernakulam Centre of Kerala University’. The other Departments established along with Hindi Department were Department of Law, Department of Physics, School of Management and School of Marine Sciences. in 1971 the ‘Ernakulam Centre’ was converted into Cochin University and in 1986 renamed as Cochin University of Science and Technology. From the period of its inception the Department has blossomed into one of the prestigious Departments among Teaching and Research in Hindi.
As one of the leading Departments in the Country it is having interactive programmes with so many institutions and organizations. The Department of Electronics, Government of India has sanctioned a Major Project (CALT –Computer Aided Language Teaching) to the Department in 1992 considering its infrastructural facilities.
The UGC has selected the Department for its DRS (Department Research Support) programme for three consecutive period i.e, 1994 -1999, 2001-2006, and 2007 – 2012. After assessing the DRS performance UGC has sanctioned its next level DSA (Department Special Assistance) Ist Phase for a period of five years from 2014 – 2019.
By implementing DRS and DSA programmes, a Special Assistance Programme of UGC (SAP) the Department is engaged in developing it in to an interdisciplinary centre. The aim of the Department is to establish itself a pioneering centre for comparative literature studies which can cater to needs of the researchers all over India.
The Government organizations like Sahitya Academy, Central Hindi Directorate, Delhi and Central Hindi Institute, Agra are interacting with this Department and the process is continuing.
The Department is one of the leading centres of research in Hindi and it has produced 250 Ph.Ds , so far. Presently 40 research scholars are working in the Department at different levels of their research work.
In the field of publication the Department has contributed much through its research journals ‘Anuseelan’. Anuseelan is a prestigious publication of the Department. it is a refereed journal in which leading writers and critics of Hindi Literature, Factulty members and research Scholars are being published their valuable thinking and research findings. This journal is national one which reaches almost all Hindi Departments of India.
The Department has also published ‘14’ books under DRS Programme. Now during the period of DSA programme also the Department is longing to publish books related to inter disciplinary and comparative literature.
The Department continuous to maintain its stature carried over for the last five decades as a research centre in South India. Majority of the students passed out from the Department have been placed in teaching profession in Schools, Colleges and Universities and in the official language departments of the Central Government Offices, Banks, Research Institutes and Public Sector undertakings.
