Department of Marine Biology, Microbiology and Biochemistry, an integral part of School of Marine Sciences of Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) has started M.Sc. programme in Marine Biology as early as 1958. Over the years Department of Marine Biology has evolved into a pioneer department in the field of Marine Biology in the country and made seminal contributions in this field. A team of talented teachers trained in different fields of Marine Biology, Microbiology and Biochemistry in India and abroad constitute the faculty. Alumnus of the department are currently holding key positions in various academic and research institutions in marine sciences in India and abroad.

Currently the department is having 3 academic programmes such as M.Sc. (Marine Biology), M.Phil. (Life Sciences) and Ph.D. Intake for M.Sc programme is 19 students and for the M. Phil it is 6. A large number of Ph.D scholars are pursuing their research in diverse topics under various disciplines of the department.The department is recognized under the Department of Science and Technology (DST) FIST and University Grants Commission (UGC) SAP and has substantial funding from various funding bodies of Govt. of India such as Ministry of Earth Sciences, Department of Science and Technology, Department of Biotechnology apart from Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment.

All the faculty members of the department have externally funded research projects. Major research projects in the field of Marine Biodiversity, Marine Benthos, Cyanobacteria, Harmful Algal Blooms, Marine Microbiology and Bioprospecting, Marine Ecology, Fisheries (capture and culture), Aquaculture (breeding of finfish and shellfish), Live feed culture, Environmental Toxicology (impact of chemical pollutants of fish and shellfish – biochemical and histological changes), Arctic Biology, Seafood quality, Fish Pathology and Aquaculture Nutrition (probiotics, antimicrobial peptides and immunostimulants) are going on in the department.

Over the years the department has built up excellent infrastructure for engaging higher end research. Sophisticated items of equipment such as GC-MS, GC, HPLC, PCR, Gel Documentation systems, Fermentor, Deep Freezers, AAS, Microbial ID system, rotory evaporators, Fluorescent microscope etc. are available for researchers. A computer network lab developed with the assistance of DST-FIST offers round the clock internet access which facilitates the access to online resources required for research without any hindrance. The research community of the department is also showing good output in terms of publications in peer reviewed international and national journals apart from active participation in various national/ international seminars/ conferences.
