Mangrove ecosystems are the most threatened and vulnerable ecosystems of the world today. These ecosystems are rich biosphere reserves of germplasm and provide a wide range of ecological services to coastal communities. Recently these ecosystems are facing large scale destruction. But for a decade there has been no scientific published data available on the mangrove cover and its extend of destruction. At that juncture a project on mangroves was sanctioned by the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, Govt. of Kerala.  The project was mainly to study the Cochin mangroves but with limited resources the entire Kerala mangroves were surveyed extending from Manjeshwaram to Velli, Thiruvanandapuram.

The foreword of the book was written by the world famous Environmentalist Dr. Madav Gadgil. The book also has the valuable comments of Dr. P.K. Abdul Azis, Former Vice Chancellor, CUSAT and Aligarh Muslim University and Dr. Sam Bentley, Director, Coastal Studies Institute, Louisiana. The first two chapters of the book provide information on the mangroves, its ecological and economic importance and their global distribution pattern.  The third chapter clearly depicts the various mangrove species of Kerala and their zonation pattern with scientific diagrams. The fourth chapter provides the identification key along with taxonomic diagrams for the identification of mangroves at species level. It also depicts the threats challenged by these ecosystems and various restoration measures for the recovery of the existing damaged habitats.
